About the Foundation

Bayfront Health Foundation

Bayfront Health Foundation was established to provide philanthropic support for Bayfront Medical Center. Funds received from individuals, corporations, foundations, granting agencies as well as events such as Bayfront on Vine, all go towards providing the margin of excellence at Bayfront - ensuring that our facilities, technology and programs are exceptional.

Bayfront Medical Center is a private, not-for-profit, independently operated, full service hospital founded in 1906 in St. Petersburg. Currently, Bayfront has 502 licensed beds and is the major provider of charity care for Pinellas County, providing over $15.1 million dollars in charity care to the community annually. Bayfront Medical Center has a long history of innovation and service to the St. Petersburg community, and has been frequently awarded and recognized for these efforts. Significant examples include:

  • One of three sites in the nation selected to train Special Forces medics.
  • Recognized as one of the country's top 100 teaching hospitals (The Solucient Report) with residents scoring the highest in-training examination scores in Florida.
  • Home to Bayflite, the largest hospital-based flight program in the Southeastern United States, and Pinellas County's only Trauma Center.
  • First on Florida's West Coast to offer revolutionary treatment options such as Deep Brain Stimulation and Gamma Knife through its Institute of Neurosciences.
  • Nine times named as Working Mother magazine's "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers."
  • St. Petersburg's longest-standing hospital, marking 100 years of service to the community in 2006.
  • Pinellas County's first nationally accredited Chest Pain Center; 103rd in the nation.
  • One of the largest employers in Pinellas County with about 2,500 employees throughout health system.
  • St. Petersburg's first nationally certified Primary Stroke Center from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

In 2004, the Bayfront Health Foundation embarked upon a major capital campaign in support of Bayfront Medical Center's three phase major capital expansion project. Phase 1 was completed in the spring of 2006 and included new surgical suites and a cardiovascular intensive care unit. Phase 2, completed in September 2007, consists of a new medical office building and an expansion to the Bayfront Heart Center including 5 new cath labs. The final phase will involve moving Bayfront's entire obstetrical program to the new All Children's Hospital (projected to be complete in 2009), keeping mothers and high risk babies together.

The cost of the expansion is estimated at over $80 million. Thus far, our Bayfront "family" (including physicians, team members and business partners) and the community have generously embraced this initiative contributing over $5.8 million.
